Ups and downs in sport

How is your assignment going? How does your body react with the intensity? It is completely normal to go through ups and downs in sport. Sometimes, you will feel invincible and other times, you will feel like you can’t do anything right. Be patient when this happens and listen to your body. You’ll eventually come out of the bad patch and it will make you appreciate the good times but it will also make you stronger mentally! It is also normal to feel a bit down the day after a hard training session. The good happy hormones (endorphin) will only [...]

Are you looking after your body?

So, any soreness? If yes, this is normal and your body will slowly adapt to the intensity, just like it had to adapt to the new mechanical action of running. Now, is the right time to find a sport masseur or a good myotherapist. You need to look after your body in more ways than just nutrition, vitamins and fluids...You need to stretch, do some leg soaking, have Epsom salt baths and get a massage at least twice a month. This will give your muscles the elasticity back after a hard work out that will create muscle damages and muscles [...]

Australian media are finally telling the truth about cholesterol

By naturopath Margaret Jasinska Cholesterol is a big topic right now. The Catalyst episode on ABC that aired last week has created a lively debate about what really causes heart disease. In short, fat and cholesterol are not the culprits, and cholesterol lowering drugs are not the solution. Newspapers, the internet and social media have been buzzing with stories about cholesterol since part 1 of the Catalyst series aired on Thursday of last week. Almost one million people tuned in. The program aimed to bust the myth that saturated fat is bad for you; that eating saturated fat will clog [...]

Chlorophyll ‘the green blood of plants’

One of the biggest things I come across in clinic are clients with a lack of energy - there are so many people simply wanting more energy - “I just don't have the energy”. Most of the time, its a simple case of getting gut function and absorption back on track - there are plenty of commonly eaten foods that cause damage to the gastro intestinal tract and reduce absorption of energy giving nutrients.   It really can be quite simple to get you back to your former beaming self and bouncing out of bed appreciating what the gift of a [...]

Thinking about doing a Detox but don’t know why it’s so important?

In our current times, there are a growing number of toxins in our food and living environment - toxic not only to our environment, but to our species.  These toxins are in the meats we eat, the pesticides herbicides, fungicides and insecticides that are sprayed over and cover our plants, fruits and vegetables - poisoning our soils.  And what about the good times - the alcohol we drink, the gluten we lovingly eat - the list continues! All this, together with the general oxidizing toxins of life such as the trans fats we ingest in our foods, xenoestrogens we [...]

One giant step for nutritional intervention!

The NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation, have just released a report, “Nutrition Standards for Consumers of Inpatient Mental Health Services in NSW”  which shows a positive shift towards using nutritional therapy for mental health conditions. In the past in Australia, the links between nutrition based interventions and mental health conditions have not been the subject of many studies. The good news that comes from the above report is that NSW Health have now identified that certain nutritional deficiencies can have a negative effect on people who suffer with depression. Specifically: Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation is helpful for people who have [...]

Did you know that turmeric can help to fight Candida?

Turmeric is a bright yellow spice commonly used in Indian cuisine. It is responsible for the vibrant yellow colour of curry powder. New research has shown that the active constituent of turmeric (called curcumin) can help to fight Candida. Interestingly enough, when combined with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), curcumin becomes 5 to 10 times more potent at killing Candida. In fact, curcumin becomes a more powerful antioxidant, and a more powerful anti-fungal if it’s combined with vitamin C. This research was published in the journal Food Chemistry. Turmeric is well known for its ability to support healthy liver and digestive [...]

Aloe Vera

by Victoria Taylor, B. H. Sc. (Naturopathy) Most species of aloe are easy to grow and are useful for both internal and external use. Plants attain their medicinal value after three years so it is best to buy a mature plant. Unflavoured aloe juice is available commercially but it is so easy to produce the product yourself with a kitchen blender. Make your own Aloe Juice To make your own gel (juice) simply take approximately 1/3 of a mature leaf and wash it to remove dust and pollution. Remove the spines from the side of the leaf and cut it [...]

Do you know the difference between minerals and vitamins?

Minerals Minerals are inorganic compounds-  meaning that they do not contain carbon.  They originate in the earth- in our soils, and cannot be made by living organisms.  Plants take up minerals from the soil they grow in - which is how we obtain most of the minerals in our diet -  from the plants we eat or indirectly from animal sources. The mineral content of soil varies geographically- for example New Zealand and Tasmanian soils are low in Iodine, Australian soils are deficient in Selenium. Traditional non organic, large scale farming of our soil uses massive amounts of pesticides and [...]
