Triple World Champ!

I started triathlon in Brussels back in 1988 inspired to beat my parents who both were good Triatheletes. I got the bug straight away and gave up Scouts and basketball to allow myself more time to train. I was part of the Belgian National Junior team in 1996 and I won the Junior National Championship Series the same year. In 1997, I decided to turn Pro and work part time at my Dad's importing business. Unfortunately I ended up with some injuries and after my fifth surgery I decided to move to Australia to live with my future wife Belinda; [...]

Keeping up with technology . . .

Recently, I read an article where it was recommended that handheld devices such as smart phones or tablets should be banned for use by children. This article made some salient points such as: Sitting and playing games on handheld devices increases the possibility of delayed development. Moving around has been found to enhance learning and physical development in children. Some kids get up in the morning, sit and watch television then switch to a handheld device such as a smart phone or tablet and continue hours and hours of sedentary behaviour – never really moving from the spot they first [...]

Breast Examination

For women of all ages, the breast self-exam is a useful tool that is easily learned. Something to remember is that you know more about how your breasts should look and feel than anyone else so please pay attention to any changes - if you do find anything different or worrying, go and see your doctor as soon as you can. This will allow for quick action if needs be, or peace of mind in the case of 'normal' breast changes that may be concerning you. There are two important ways to check your breasts. Have a long term dream not a short term goal

This time we will be talking about obsessions and obsessive personalities which are a common thread in Athletes. Have a long term dream instead of a short term goal. Find something you want to achieve that will keep you in the sport for a long time and do not take shortcuts with training. Take a step by step approach and keep your life balanced. Many Athletes I have met end up doing a three year cycle and never race again because their obsessive approach plus all the hours of training meant they sacrificed too much. They end up questioning why [...]

Do you know the symptoms of diabetes?

By Margaret Jasinska, Naturopath Approximately 280 Australians develop diabetes each day. What a frightening statistic. Currently nearly 2 million Australians have diabetes, but it’s estimated that up to half of the cases of type 2 diabetes remain undiagnosed. By 2031 it is thought that 3.3 million Australians will have type 2 diabetes. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are becoming increasingly prevalent, but most diabetics in this country have type 2 diabetes. Why are there so many cases that go undiagnosed? The symptoms of type 2 diabetes can be very mild and some people get no symptoms at all [...]

Simple Rules to Blending!

You need a blender-  ground breaking info! Any blender will do, but preferably a powerful one like the Froothie. A powerful good quality blender will enable you to get a singular consistency to your smoothie that a regular blender cannot.  If you are not a fan of green leafy vegetables or vegetables in general, using a high powered blender will eliminate lumpy pieces of individual vegetables, producing a smooth enjoyable texture you will become addicted to! A liquid base-  Filtered water and coconut water are my favourites- and i mean coconut water straight out of the white juvenile coconut of [...]

Binge Eating Disorders

Four new diagnosed disorders that you may find very familiar. One of the most common forms of disordered eating, and perhaps the least understood, is binge eating disorder (BED).  Those experiencing BED compulsively eat large quantities of food and tend to feel secretive and shameful about their eating. Binge episodes are preceded by strong urges and a sense of being out of control.  A person with BED has very similar drives and feelings as someone with bulimia, but they don't attempt to compensate for their binges through over exercising, laxative abuse or vomiting.  The causes of eating disorders are varied  [...]
