5 Simple Ways to Reduce Inflammation

By Jessah Shaw, Adv Dip (Nut Med)

Inflammation refers to your body’s physiological response from the immune system to facilitate healing of an injury or any sort of attack upon your tissues. Physically, inflammation is felt as swelling, redness, heat and pain. Inflammation can be caused by an excess amount of free radicals or oxidation in our cells, and becomes more common as we get older and our immune system becomes more susceptible to inflammation. Chronic inflammation or unresolved inflammation is the real concern that can cause tissue destruction, leading to degenerative diseases, scar tissue and premature ageing.

There are many possible causes of excessive inflammation such as autoimmune genes, a poor diet, leaky gut, fatty liver, mechanical trauma, wear and tear on the joints, adrenal insufficiency, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, certain viruses, chronic infections and inflammatory hormones.

Read on for 5 simple ways to reduce inflammation:

1) Cut back on the booze

For many, having a cold beer or glass of wine after a long day is a popular way to wind down. The body recognises alcohol as a toxin and this contributes to systemic inflammation (the type that causes chronic diseases) by wreaking havoc on your gut microbiome, liver function, and even brain health. We are not necessarily saying to go cold turkey but make it a point to have 4-5 alcohol free days a week. And if you do decide to have a drink have just 1 or 2 and opt for an organic wine or a spirit mixed with soda over the heavier beers or spirits mixed with soft drink and/or juice. This should reduce the chances of having a hangover or headache the next day, as well as containing less sugar and carbohydrates.

2) Ensure you are getting enough sleep

It is so critical to get sufficient sleep every night. While the exact amount can vary depending on the individual, it is usually recommended to get between 7-9 hours of undisturbed sleep a night. If you are waking up several times a night, this will certainly impact your sleep quality. Sleep is a restorative process and essential for a strong immune system, energy levels, brain health, as well as regulating hunger hormones and alleviating weight gain. Our magnesium powder is excellent for promoting healthy sleep and relaxing the nervous system. See this article for sleep tips.

3) Find ways to relax

It cannot be stressed (no pun intended) the importance of finding healthy ways to relax when dealing with stress. Stress can trigger an inflammatory response that can exacerbate any health condition as well as disrupt sleep, appetite and your overall mental state. Effective ways to cope with stress include talking about it with a loved one, listening to relaxing music, spending time in nature, meditating, or exercising. 4) Exercise

Exercise does wonders for lowering inflammation, as well as boosting endorphins (our feel-good hormones), improving our cardiovascular health and lung health, improving our overall energy and supporting a healthy weight. There are so many different ways to exercise that it doesn’t need to be a chore. Effective forms of exercise include running, jogging, swimming, dancing, Yoga, Pilates, and weight training. If you struggle to feel motivated, recruit a friend to exercise with or find a fun playlist or podcast to listen to. L-glutamine is an amino acid that is vital for muscle growth, muscle recovery, gut repair and brain function.

5) Eat clean

This is a bit of a broad statement, but the best way to put it is to focus on primarily eating whole foods or nutrient-dense foods and minimising or avoiding processed foods, sugar and refined carbohydrates.
