Boost your memory with these 7 foods
By Louise Belle BHSc (Nut Med)
Are you constantly losing your keys, forgetting what day it is or calling people by the wrong name? Perhaps you have trouble recalling memories or remembering to complete simple tasks. Particular foods can actually help to boost your memory.
1. Olive oil
This wonderful oil is bursting with healthy fats and polyphenols which support brain health and protect the brain from damaging compounds. Extra virgin olive oil offers the greatest benefit and can be drizzled over your salad, baked potato or used to marinate.
Sniffing rosemary has been shown to improve working memory and short-term memory. Try keeping some rosemary at your desk and inhaling it throughout the day, particularly when you are trying to study or need to remember important details. It is also a delicious seasoning in soups and on roast veggies.
Eggs are a wonderful source of choline, a nutrient needed to produce acetylcholine which is vital for memory. They are also high in other B vitamins and folate. Whether you like them scrambled, fried, poached or baked – eggs are great for your brain and memory.
Tyrosine is an amino acid found in protein-rich foods such as turkey, chicken, cheese, milk, nuts and seeds. It is needed for the production of neurotransmitters and can support memory and concentration. It can be taken in powder form to reach an optimal dosage.
A large percentage of the brain is made up of fat, including omega 3’s. Fatty fish such as anchovies, salmon, sardines, trout and herring are great sources of omega 3’s that you can include in your regular diet to maintain healthy brain function such as memory and to reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Shaped like little brains, walnuts are high in alpha-linolenic acid and have been shown to improve memory and cognitive function when a small handful is consumed every day. You can use them in your trail mix, make nut loaf or some bliss balls.
7. Green tea
Jam-packed with antioxidants, green tea is also a great source of L-theanine and caffeine which have been shown to boost memory, attention and alertness. Sip on green tea throughout the day for a brain boost!
Ultimate Superfood Powder is jam-packed with nutrients and antioxidants that reduce inflammation in the body and help to protect the body (including the brain) against free radical damage. It is also a good source of protein.
