5 hidden benefits of regular exercise

By Louise Belle BHSc (Nut Med)

We all know exercise is beneficial for us, but it can be easy to convince ourselves that we don’t need to exercise, especially if we’re not training for an event or have any specific weight loss or fitness goals. The truth is, whether you have fitness goals or not, exercise is beneficial for your whole body, and you should be doing some form of exercise every week. A good aim is to do 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise (where you’re slightly out of breath and break a sweat), 3 times per week.

Here are some hidden benefits of exercise:

1. Better ZZZ’s

Studies have shown that regular exercise can improve overall sleep quality and quantity. It can increase the time you spend in the deep stages of sleep, even in people who suffer sleep troubles. If you’re tossing and turning during the night, a run on the treadmill may be just what you need! See Dr Cabot’s book Tired of Not Sleeping?

2. Boosted energy levels

Exercise enhances blood flow and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscle tissue. This improves the ability of these tissues to produce energy, otherwise known as ATP. Those who exercise regularly have increased energy levels and less feelings of fatigue than those who lead a more sedentary lifestyle.

3. Improved mood

Exercise has been shown to improve memory, concentration and overall cognitive function. It is also very beneficial for boosting mood, due to the release of the feel-good endorphins produced during exercise. Regular exercise can help to improve mood in the long term. Tyrosine is a ‘mood food’ that can help to reduce stress levels and to stabilise mood.

4. Better gut bugs

A study found that athletes had a greater diversity and number of gut bugs, than those who didn’t exercise. The specific species of bacteria ‘Akkermansiaceae’ (that were abundant in the athlete’s guts) is associated with reduced systemic inflammation and obesity. The high protein diets that the athletes were following could also have influenced their gut bacteria. Ultimate Gut Health powder contains a probiotic which can improve the population of good bacteria in the gut.

5. Improved sex life

This is a bonus! Exercise holds many potential benefits for igniting that flare. Firstly, exercise boosts your energy levels, can enhance arousal for women and can prevent erectile problems in men. Exercise also improves physical appearance and is great for the confidence! See Dr Cabot’s book- Increase Your Sex Drive Naturally.
