Try some (or all) of the recipes below for some relief from Menopause symptoms
HOT FLUSH JUICE
This juice provides nutrients to cool the body and calm the nervous system.
- 1 orange or 1 grapefruit with white pith left on
- 2 lettuce leaves
- 4cm slice watermelon
- ½ cup bean sprouts (soybean or alfalfa are most effective)
- ¼ cup parsley
- 1 small Lebanese cucumber
- 3 cm slice beetroot
Wash, trim and chop. Peel orange, leaving on as much white pith as possible. Put all ingredients through juicer.
Lettuce is cooling to the body and contains a natural sedative called lactucarium. It also contains magnesium to reduce insomnia.
Bean sprouts are high in plant hormones known as phyto-estrogens.
Watermelon is cooling and aids depression. It also contains Vitamin B to balance the nervous system.
Parsley is rich in vitamin C and bioflavonoids, which help to relieve hot flushes
Orange and grapefruit contain bioflavonoids in their white pith, which calm hot flushes.
Cucumber is cooling and calming and helps to reduce any tendency to high blood pressure, which may first arise during the menopause.
Beetroot is beneficial for energy and the blood circulation.
MENOPAUSE SMOOTHIE
- 1 cup calcium fortified soymilk (or if you prefer try almond, oat, coconut or rice milk)
- 1 banana or ½ cup berries of your choice
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed or 1tsp of cold-pressed flaxseed oil
- 2 passionfruit pulp
Place all ingredients into a blender and process until smooth. Add a few ice cubes while blending for a refreshing drink. Whey protein powder may be added if you need extra energy.
Drink in the morning, and any time during the day.
Bananas are high in potassium, as well as vitamin B, which helps to balance the nervous system and reduce symptoms of fatigue.
Passionfruit is valuable during menopause to help with poor libido.
Flaxseeds are a superior source of healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which help to maintain hormonal balance. Omega 3 fatty acids can lower levels of the bad LDL cholesterol, which helps to protect the cardiovascular system. Flaxseed is high in lignans, which are phytoestrogens, and reduce the risk of cancer.
JUICE FOR MENOPAUSE No.1
- 2 sticks celery
- ½ cucumber
- ½ cup alfalfa sprouts
- 2 lettuce leaves [iceberg]
- 5cm slice pineapple
- 3 spinach leaves
Wash, trim and chop and pass all through the juicer.
Celery contains calcium, potassium and magnesium and vitamin B, which all help to calm the nervous system.
Cucumber contains potassium and magnesium, which will help to control any blood pressure problems that may arise during menopause.
Iceberg lettuce supplies calcium, potassium and magnesium as well as iron and vitamin B, which can reduce nervous tension and insomnia.
Pineapple improves digestion and has a cooling effect upon the body.
Spinach contains vitamin K, which is needed to maintain healthy bones and prevent osteoporosis.
JUICE FOR MENOPAUSE No.2
- 1 orange or 1 grapefruit (leave pith on)
- 2 lettuce leaves
- 5cm slice watermelon
- ½ cup mung bean or alfalfa sprouts
- ¼ cup parsley
- 1 small Lebanese cucumber
- 5cm slice beetroot
Wash, trim and chop all ingredients and pass through the juicer.

Useful foods and supplements -
- Soybeans and their products such as tofu and tempeh.
- Oily fish, raw nuts and seeds.
- Essential fatty acids - eg flaxseed oil and evening primrose oil.
- The herbs - dong quai, sage, liquorice, sarsaparilla, rose hip, wild yam, kelp - these are available all combined together in some supplements for menopause.
